How OEE is calculated

Availability Description Formula / Details
Availability Total scheduled time (minutes) A2 — Sum of all shift times. Example: 3 shifts × 8 hours = 24 hrs/day.
Availability Total scheduled non-working time (minutes) A3 — Lunch break, tea break, warming-up, daily PM, etc.
Availability Available time A1 = A2 − A3
Availability Machine downtime (minutes) B — Downtimes like setup change, breakdown, power issues, no raw material, inspection, etc.
Availability Availability % A % = (100 × (A1 − B)) / A1
Performance Description Formula / Details
Performance Standard cycle time (seconds) S — Time from cycle start to end for one part.
Performance Standard unload + load time (seconds) U — Idle time between two cycles.
Performance Produced quantity P1 — Number of parts produced.
Performance Planned quantity P2 = (A1 − B) / (S + U) — Parts theoretically possible in available running time.
Performance Performance % P % = 100 × (P1 / P2)
Quality Description Formula / Details
Quality Rejected quantity R — Number of parts rejected (exclude reworked parts).
Quality Quality % Q % = 100 × (R / P1)

OEE losses and their meaning

Type of loss Meaning Examples
Not scheduled for production
Time when the machine is not planned to run
Non-working shifts, holidays, lunch breaks, tea breaks
Failure, Idle time
Time when the machine is planned to run, but is not running. This includes all events that stop production long enough where it makes sense to track a reason for the downtime (typically several minutes).
Setup, machine breakdown, inspection, accident, no raw material, power shutdown, part unloading and loading.
Failure, Idle time
Machine running at lower than normal production rate, and downtimes of duration so small that it does not make sense to track the reason for the downtime
Part unload/load time that is longer than the standard unload/load time, cycle times that are longer than the standard cycle time, rework
Scrap
Number of rejected parts.
